Final Assessment: Interview

SUBTITLES FOR THE INTERVIEW:
1. Do you believe in any philosophical teachings or religion?
For my personal life, I have this idea about making everyone get equal chance for education. I think that’s a very good development for ancient China because more and more people are getting chance to be educated.

2. Who or what has influenced you to believe in these ideas?
I think during my master course, I learned more about Daoism. I like Taoyuanming and Zhuangzi. I think their philosophy and works influenced me a lot.

3. Do any of your family members also have these beliefs?
None of my family members believes in religion. However, my older brother is interested in Buddhism and wears the bracelet and goes to Buddhist temples to pray. In Chinese New Year, he goes to temples to participate in religious activities.

4. Do many people share similar beliefs in China?
In China, people actually believe different religions, like Taoism, Buddhism, or Christianity. Now people are more open about their religions so people get along well even with different religions. But they can get along well and personally, we don’t talk about religions often in our own life.

5. How has your belief impacted your life?
From Daoism, I learned how to be more optimistic. You know where you are before; you know where you will be in the future. So before, I was very sad about life because you know where you will be. But after I learned about Daoist teachings, I learned to be more optimistic. Everyone has a life so we have to take care of present time and do more meaningful deeds.

6. Which part of your belief is the most important to you?
People say that present time is a gift for you so we should always live our best in the present time.

7. How has Confucianism affected the Chinese society?
Even today, in modern society, men play the main role. It is very much like Confucius ideas. In country, the king is the highest one; in the house, the husband is superior and everyone follows his idea. Nowadays, Confucius ideas still affect the entire society. Confucius stated that one should always be loyal for the people above him or her. Yet, sometimes I don’t think this is a good belief because today, we have to think more critically. Confucius has good influence for the entire society, but also can give the wrong idea to the society.

8. Do you think people’s beliefs are affected by where they live?
I do think that people’s beliefs are affected by their locations because people live in different regions have different background. That is why they have different religions. For example, people in the Hui area believe in Islam. People in minority groups probably believe in Buddhism so where one lives is a factor of what one believes in.

9. Do you believe in afterlife?
I don’t believe in afterlife, but I do believe in this current life. We should always take care of the present time for meaningful things.

10. Why do you think so many Chinese follow Confucius ideas?
I think this is because during the past 2,000 years, people who controlled the Chinese empires believed in Confucianism. Many Confucius ideas helped them rule the country longer and better so they were able to make their empire last longer by making people believe in Confucius ideas.
